Working Abroad in Magaluf
Name and town?
Andy (Donut) from Reading.

Age?
18.

What were you doing before you worked abroad?
I was a scaffolder.

What made you decide to work abroad for a season?
I really wanted to get away from home and work! I was working too hard every day for my age, getting stuck in the same routine I just wanted to get away…

What resort were you in?
I spent my first (and not last) season in Magaluf, Mallorca.

What job did you do?
I worked as a club P.R for the best club, Tokio Joe’s mofos brrrrrraaaaaaaapppppp!!!!!

How did you find the job?

Three days before I left, I woke up and literally said to myself, that’s it I need to get away, I found a company on the web called ‘Air Promotions’, they were excellent, they provide you with cheap flights, sort out a months accommodation in a nice hotel, a rep meets you at the airport and they help you have an awesome first few weeks, oh yeah they help you find a job too!

How long were you away, and did you last the whole season?
I started at the beginning of the season in May, and came back early on the fifth of August before the season finished which meant I was there for my 19th Birthday, I had made some great mates, so we all dressed up as pirates went to a restaurant on the beach and then hit the clubs… Best birthday ever…

Tell us the best bits of your season…
Out in magaluf (shagaluf) you meet some amazing people from all places and all backgrounds, its not just about clubbing and boozing, for me I loved making new pals, playing some intense footy on the beach (intense meaning with some beers, ice creams, fresh pineapple and melons), chatting up Swedish beauty’s, and trying to give the people that are on holiday a wicked time. Every other week me and my buddy J would get on the bus to Palma, it was only 4euro return and it only took twenty minutes, and the shopping there is amazing, it was like being in Paris or Milan, they have the usual H&M and Zara, but they also have some awesome Spanish shops with some funky fashion that your mates back home just couldn’t get there hands on! Fact!
The funniest bit of the trip was having a night off work, getting pretty damn wasted with a mate, and waking up in Germany, yes the country, with our England shirts on, shorts and flip flops and no bag, money or change of clothes of course) you still wonder why my mates call me donut?

Did you make some good mates?
I made so many mates it was unbelievable, my best mates ranged from a big Villa fan called Paul from Birmingham, to a crazy ex-army Welshman that I worked with called Gav, and my boss Mikey was probably the coolest dude you could ever meet, he is a ‘magaluf veteran’ and he showed me how to party with Swedish ladies, thank you to Mikey the big dogg!!!.

Sounds all good, but were there any negatives?
I suppose the only bad thing was having to survive out there on the money, I was used to earning big bucks back home, luckily where I got a job they gave the best wages, but we had to be the best! But a few of us workers had our own secret to survival I think it was a tradition, we used to keep an eye out for people that were staying in the all-inclusive hotels, if they had the hotel wristbands we used to ask politely for them which never really worked, so we mostly paid for them, these wristbands entitled them to free food and drink in the hotel, so if you ask someone for their wristband, most of them will just rip em off if they’re drunk, then all you got to do is D.I.Y it onto your sun kissed arm and find yourself free food and drink for the whole season… The lads will kill me for letting out that tip…

Was anything included with your job like, accommodation or food?
Money and free drinks at your club/bar is the only thing most work places have to offer, which is good enough right? The accommodation is quite cheap anyway, and if you get out there early enough in the season it’s easy enough to find, but the later you leave it, the harder it is to find and it gets more expensive. Something you need to get in Magaluf is your M.C.P workers card, if you get a job at an m.c.p club (Tokio Joe’s, Boomerangs, Bananas, Car wash, and Fusion) you can get it for free, if not you might have to pay like 25euro for a six month pass, but its well worth it, it gets you in all clubs (not BCM) for free and workers drinks prices everywhere, which in most places is one euro a drink! P.s on your workers card get a mad photo of yourself on it… (Sorts the men out from the boys)..

What advice would you give to someone wanting to work in Magaluf?
Get out there early, get a job at a place you like, and get some permanent accommodation sorted with some good people and that will set you up for an amazing summer, speak to a few people, you will get a job trial somewhere, be really outgoing, try to be funny and friendly, and most important be funky and good looking, all you have to do (especially ladies) is dress to kill and you will be in for a job anywhere you want guaranteed, get out there early enough but don’t worry its never too late…

Did you love it, would you do it again?
Soon as you get back from Magaluf you will want to go back. I knew a few people that gave up mid-season, only a few days later they would be back in the mixer saying; ‘cant believe I left’, ‘what was I thinking’ and I’m so happy to be back. That’s because, yeah, it does get hard, but you need to look at the things that are so much better than home, every day is like a holiday, home will be exactly the same when you get back I promise, and no matter how bad it gets, get yourself in Tokio Joe’s to lift your pimpin spirits up! You WILL love Magaluf. Fact. All the love, Donut, Tokio Joe’s 2006 pr crew…
